A transfer by light aircraft from Lusaka to Mfuwe is followed by a 4x4 to reach the South Luangwa National Park.
Situated on the fringe of the subtropical region, South Luangwa hosts a wide diversity of habitats: mopane forests; natural grasslands; and mahogany woodlands on the edge of the Luangwa River.
Consequently, the diversity of fauna and flora is impressive: 40 species of mammals; 150 species of trees; and 455 bird species! Among the most iconic animals, one can spot lion, spotted hyena and also elephant, hippos, crocodiles and amazing birds such as the yellow-billed storks and crowned cranes. South Luangwa is also renowned for its high density of leopards and these secretive felines are regularly seen during night game drives.
The first two nights are spent in Kaingo Camp, located at the confluence between the Luangwa and Mwamba rivers. The four thatched chalets (each accommodating two people) are equipped with en-suite facilities. Watch hippos and other animals bathing in the river from the safety of a well-positioned, large wooden platform. The meals served here are of fantastic quality, with most of the ingredients coming from the owner’s farm!
Activities during the two days include walking safaris (accompanied by a guide) and 4x4 safaris (night and day).
Today you have a wonderful opportunity to reach our next stop, Mwamba Camp, by foot. This is a three-hour walk through the bush – but if you’d rather take it easy, you can also travel by 4x4.
Mwamba Camp is adjacent to the Mwamba River and provides an ideal viewpoint for game watching near the waterholes. With its number of guests limited to six, the quality of service, meals and accommodation at Mwamba Camp is especially high. Special mention must be made of the chalets, which have open roofs - allow you literally to sleep under the African stars! The architecture of the camp blends harmoniously with the greenery around it.
Activities during our stay at Mwamba include walking safaris with a professional tracker; and night and day 4x4 safaris.
We have an early transfer (5.30am) to Mfuwe and fly by light aircraft to Lusaka, before boarding our flight to Johannesburg, where the tour ends.
This tour is only available from May to October because all the camps are closed during the rainy season.
